MaK’s remit is the relief of poverty, sickness and distress. This has involved us in supporting recovery from ethnic cleansing including supporting children medically evacuated to the UK following the massacre of their family.
We aim to promote justice and equality by leading by example and undertaking projects that encourage peace and understanding.
We support victims of war crimes to help bring those guilty to justice. MaK works with the British Embassy and our legal advisers and have provided witness support at war crimes trials.
MaK aims to be inclusive and supports women in leadership and in decision making. MaK supports women though its new women’s business initiative.
We encourage young Kosovars to take on responsibilities in MaK.
MaK involves Handikos (an NGO in Kosovo that works with people with disabilities) in its activities in Kosovo. We work for inclusion of people with disabilities.
We encourage equality by resourcing schools and actively supporting the professional and vocational development of young people in Kosovo.
The Bogujevci family
The Bogujevci family includes five cousins who were aged 5 to 13 years in 1999 when medically evacuated to Manchester by the British Army. The children are the sole survivors of a massacre on March 28, 1999, of women and children in Podujeva, Kosova, which took place the height of the Balkans ethnic cleansing campaign. Cousins, Genc, Lirie, Jehona, Fatos and Saranda, received multiple gunshot injuries and lost 8 members of their family and their close friends, the Duriqi family. The Manchester Peace Park is being created at the request of the Bogujevci children in their home town, Podujeva. The Bogujecvci children received the first International Anne Frank Award for Moral Courage after MaK supported them to give evidence against paramilitaries in Serbia and Canada, the first children to give evidence at a war crimes trial. This historic step was filmed by networked BBC in a documentary ‘Real Story’.
